Ubisoft’s upcoming PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 open-world multiplayer racer, The Crew, will be out in the fall, have microtransactions, and run at 1080p and 30 FPS on consoles, according to Ubisoft.
The Crew’s microtransaction system seems to be similar to many mobile games, which allow users to trade cash for time.
“We can confirm that performance parts can be unlocked through progression as well as microtransactions,” a Ubisoft representative told VideoGamer.com. “All content can be unlocked through progression, but for busy gamers who want to save some time, they will have the opportunity to buy some items in-game.”
Let’s hope this doesn’t mean that the game gets extra grindy and that it takes forever to unlock things, as most free-to-play mobile games do to encourage players to spend. The fact that the game has two currencies, cash and “Crew Credits,” again, just like most mobile cash hogs, doesn’t put me at ease. That’s fine in a free game, but The Crew isn’t free-to-play. The Crew costs $60.
On the other hand Forza and Gran Turismo have implemented microtransactions without too much trauma, so hopefully Ubisoft can also strike that balance.
According to Gamespot The Crew is already available for preorder in two versions for consoles:
“The Limited Edition and the Muscle Edition. The Limited Edition includes early access to cars like the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, Mini Cooper S, and Dodge Ram SRT-10. Meanwhile, the Muscle Edition–available only at GameStop–will include everything from the LE, as well as early access to the 2015 Ford Mustang GT. Both versions include 10,000 bonus “Crew Credits.”
Both versions are listed on various retailers for the standard $60 price.
