Need For Speed Movie Not the ‘Most Wanted’ at the Box Office


Those who were hoping the Need for Speed franchise would translate well to the silver screen are likely to be disappointed. Despite the presence of Breaking Bad’s red-hot Aaron Paul, the Need for Speed movie sputtered into theaters, ending up in third place behind Mr. Peabody and Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire.

According to, the movie earned an estimated $17.8 million in the U.S. and $45.6 million overseas, with the Chinese take actually being higher than the U.S. take. The Chinese are becoming well-known for their appetite for loud, noisy American action movies, plot and sense-making optional, so there’s probably a future for films like Need for Speed.

The question of whether it’s possible to make a truly faithful, successful movie out of a video game is still open, though.
