Those who were hoping the Need for Speed franchise would translate well to the silver screen are likely to be disappointed. Despite the presence of Breaking Bad’s red-hot Aaron Paul, the Need for Speed movie sputtered into theaters, ending up in third place behind Mr. Peabody and Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire.
According to MTV.com, the movie earned an estimated $17.8 million in the U.S. and $45.6 million overseas, with the Chinese take actually being higher than the U.S. take. The Chinese are becoming well-known for their appetite for loud, noisy American action movies, plot and sense-making optional, so there’s probably a future for films like Need for Speed.
The question of whether it’s possible to make a truly faithful, successful movie out of a video game is still open, though.
