Hacked Message Gets Into GTA Online

How did a hacker manage to get a pop-up message to appear in GTA Online for thousands of players? And was the hacker trying to accomplish anything beyond a cheap prank?

The message started appearing a few days ago in GTA Online in the form of a pop-up that stated “Rockstar Message GTA VI Coming 2019.” Believable? Hardly. Such a stilted statement coming from out of nowhere, appearing nowhere else but specific versions of GTA5, and timed to take the thunder away from Red Dead Redemption 2? How likely was it?

It didn’t take the community long to band together and figure out the messages were only being received by users of the PC, XBox 360 and PS3 versions of GTA5. What’s the difference between these platforms vs. PS4 and XBox One? Mods are allowed on them. The theory emerged that somebody, somehow, was using a mod to pull a prank, and not a very effective one.

This was later confirmed by Rockstar themselves, whose support team sent this statement in a tweet: “This is a hoax made with the use of mods, and not an official message or statement from Rockstar Games.”

So there you have it. Expect a patch in the near future to the Rockstar Social Club to prevent this from happening again. Were any of you actually fooled?
