Mario Kart Tour Release Date Announced

Nintendo has so far brought classic boredom busters like Dr. Mario to phone screens, but there’s been one gaping hole for some time, and when will it be filled? When will we be able to play Mario Kart on mobile devices?

Very soon, we’re pleased to report. Nintendo announced in a new trailer today that Mario Kart Tour will be released September 25.

This version of Mario Kart contains several classic favorites like Rainbow Road, Luigi’s Mansion, Koopa Troopa Beach, and Dino Dino Jungle, but they’re also mixing it up with new courses based on locations in the real world. Soon you’ll be able to fire shells from the streets of New York, Tokyo or Paris. There will also be special event courses that players can only participate in for a limited time.

One big hovering question: how exactly will Nintendo monetize this, and will it get in the way of playing the game? The famed game maker mentions that certain characters, karts and gliders will be unlockable, so we would imagine they will also offer that stuff for literal sale. This would be the best way to go about it. We really hope Mario’s kart does not run on gasoline that takes actual dollars now.

Mario Kart Tour will be free to download September 25 on iOS and Android devices. You can also preorder the game, but there is little point since it’s a digital-only release.
