Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell’s Disney-Style Musical Number Is Wickedly Funny
When Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell was first shown at PAX Prime, the biggest attention-getter wasn’t the hellish new landscape or the infernal weapons. It was a full Disney-style musical number that drew the most buzz.
Volition has finally released a video of that musical number to the general public, and it doesn’t disappoint. Just like a Disney number it features dramatic singing and emotional scenes. It’s a little unlike your usual Disney fair in that the conflict is mostly between Satan and his daughter, although Gat and Kinzie sing a bit too. Also, lyrics like “You’ve got to stay the course, and kill without remorse” might be a little too dark for Disney.
The musical number spins out of an argument between Satan and his daughter, Jezebel. Because the player character from the first four Saint’s Row games is clearly the most deadly person in the universe, Satan has tried to arrange a shotgun wedding between the protagonist and Jezebel as encouragement for The Boss/President/God Emperor to lead Satan’s armies in a war against heaven. But the heart wants what it wants, and Jezebel does not want The Boss/President/God Emperor, creating a dilemma fit for a Disney Princess.
Gat also gets a talking gun as a sidekick and there are other Disney elements, Creative Director Steve Jaros told Game Informer.
“A lot of the plot of this is very Disney-inspired,” Jaros says. “The story book is at the beginning of Sleeping Beauty. All of the cutscenes were inspired by different Disney movies. Sometimes it’s a lot subtler. This is the ‘Part of your World’” cutscene. [Jezebel] runs away, and there’s a scene like the one where Aladdin meets Jasmine. There’s the Merida cutscene; she doesn’t want to get married. They’re based on small kernels.”
Gat Out of Hell features the city of New Hades which Volition says is about half the size of Steelport in Saints Row IV, new powers, new weapons like a lethal arm-chair called the Arm Chairmageddon, and Gat and hacker Kinzie Kensington as playable character both solo and cooperatively.
Gat Out of Hell will be out Jan. 20. for the PS3, PS4, PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The standalone version for PC and last-gen consoles will cost $19.99. It will be bundled with Saints Row: IV in the PS4 and Xbox One versions, titled Saints Row IV: Re-Elected.
