Rocket League Is Going Free To Play

What has been the effect of the popular car-soccer game Rocket League falling under the ownership of Epic Games? Until now, it wasn’t that noticeable…but what about their latest move makes it blatant?

Developer Psyonix announced today Rocket League will become a free to play series later this summer. The game will remain the same, and everyone who paid cash for a copy will notice no change (it’s already been subsisting on DLC microtransactions for a while now). But from a certain point forward the $20 price tag will be dropped. Sure hope no one decided today was the day to purchase it, right before reading this.

But hey…don’t be sore. Psyonix plans to make it up to you, by giving everyone who paid for the game all this free stuff:

  • All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free to play
  • “Est. 20XX” title that displays the year when the player first started playing Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner

While we’re talking about Epic owning Rocket League…don’t you think it’s odd that the game is on Steam instead of the Epic Games Store? So do they…guess what their next move is? Psyonix also announced today the game is leaving Steam and setting up permanent residence at the Epic Games Store, for the same price (nothing).

Rocket League is available now for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, XBox One and PC.
