Remasters Of PS2 GTAs Are Possible

Given the recent trend of game publishers reprinting their PS2 and PS3 games in high-definition as “remastered” editions, one would assume Rockstar would take notice. A simple inexpensive remaster of GTA 3 or Vice City would be like printing money, right?

Not so fast, says Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. Addressing a question asked during their earnings report today, Zelnick said there had to be a better purpose for a GTA PS2 remaster than just to do it. “It’s something [Rockstar Games] will decide in due course,” he said, adding that Rockstar “wouldn’t do anything that’s not going to look great creatively.”

“The starting point is, ‘Is this going to delight customers, is this going to look good?’ You know that we’re a company that is not driven first and foremost by ‘Can we create revenue this way?’ We would start by saying, ‘Will this be exciting to consumers, will they be happy with it, will it reflect well on our brand, will it reflect well on our company?'”

One reason Zelnick may not feel an urgency to remaster old GTA games, though, may be because GTA V won’t stop generating profits on its own. Before Take-Two produces new product, it has to be convinced there’s a reason to have it. In the meantime players will have to make do with HD mods on the PC.
