Project Cars Wii U Version May Shift To Nintendo’s Next Console

on

Bad news for all five people naive enough to be waiting for the Wii U version of Project Cars. The other versions of the game are already out, but the Nintendo version is MIA and there’s a reason: trying to stuff all the content Slightly Mad Studios made for the game into something that will run on the Wii U’s last-gen processor is very very hard.

Ian Bell, head of the development studio, admitted as much in the official Project Cars forums: “OK I’ll come clean. At the moment we’re running at about 23FPS on the WiiU. We’re awaiting/hoping for more of a hardware announcement at E3… ” He goes on to admit the best resolution they’re able to achieve on the machine is 720p. Nintendo’s next console is codenamed NX and was announced to be under development months ago.

Of course, we don’t know when the NX will actually be available, we just know it WON’T be anytime soon. Nintendo doesn’t plan to even speak about it until 2016, and it’s anybody’s guess when we could actually see gameplay footage. By that time, Project Cars 2 (or 3) might already be out.

Project Cars on Wii U isn’t officially dead, but unless SMS wants to signficantly cut back on graphics or features (which would hurt the game’s Metacritic score), it’s my opinion this port is headed on a road to cancellation.
