What was just added to Need For Speed Heat? And can we expect it in other games from the same publisher?
Electronic Arts, despite being one of the largest video game publishers in the world, has been slow to jump on the cross-play trend. Cross-play, for the uninformed, is a mod of online play where users of a game on different machines can interact with one another, despite the hardware barrier. The concept has been growing in support for the past few years, though some console manufacturers (glances in Sony’s direction) have been slow to embrace it.
Now EA and developer Criterion Games have added the feature to Need For Speed Heat. Once you install the latest update, you’ll gain the ability to race competitors from Playstation 4, XBox One and PC, no matter which of these you’re using.
“At Criterion, we’ve always believed that games are better with friends,” says Matt Webster, general manager of Criterion Games, in a blog post announcing the feature. “We don’t want your platform of choice to be a barrier for that experience. You can search for your friends who are playing on any of the above systems, given they’ve opted in for cross-play as well, inside the Find Players menu. Then, go to the new EA Friends tab in the Party Menu to see who’s online to play with.”
Webster also says this will be the final update for Need For Speed Heat…because they’re working on the next Need For Speed game! We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next.
