Full Cross-Platform Play Has Come To Rocket League
Can it be? is it true? Has the final barrier separating one gamer from another finally been toppled? Yes, we can confirm full cross-platform play has arrived for Rocket League.
For the longest time, full cross-platform play was believed to be impossible, because of one crucial factor: Sony. Microsoft and Nintendo have passively allowed one third-party game on their machines to match up with another on a rival machine, because in the end, it made little difference to their bottom line — and resisting would more likely hurt it. Sony did not figure this out until way past too late, forbidding the most popular game of our modern era (Fortnite) from cross-platform behavior.
After Fortnite players found their accounts suddenly tied to one console without warning, the angry protests were heard around the world…and at first were ignored by Sony. Fortunately they caved and let Epic Games set the precedent for cross-platform matches….a precedent Rocket League is the first to take advantage of.
With special thanks to all of our friends and colleagues at PlayStation, we are thrilled to announce that starting RIGHT NOW, Rocket League has entered the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program! Players on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam can now randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online match types (i.e. Casual, Competitive, and Extra Modes).
To make sure that Cross-Platform play is enabled (it is by default), head to the “Main Menu,” select “Options” and then make sure the “Cross-Platform Play” box is checked in the “Gameplay” tab. And that’s all there is to it. You are now ready to play against gamers on other platforms across the world!
As it stands at the moment, the feature is only half-active. Random match-ups with other console gamers is live, but creating deliberate parties with members that use other machines isn’t possible just yet. That feature will arrive with Rocket League’s first update of 2019, coming soon.
